Membership Types 

Select one of the five basic member types described below. Many of these member types have an option for joint membership, which is selected later in the process.


Student Membership: for those who are enrolled, either full-time or part-time, as undergraduate or graduate students (documentation of student status may be requested).

Supported Membership: for those who have completed their studies and whose income is $35,000 USD or less.

Retired Membership: for those over the age of 65 and/or those who have retired from their academic positions.

Overseas Membership: for those who reside outside North America and are members of another professional music society.

Regular Membership: for those who are not eligible for any other category of membership.

Society for Music Theory

The Society for Music Theory promotes the development of and engagement with music theory as a scholarly and pedagogical discipline. We construe this discipline broadly as embracing all approaches, from conceptual to practical, and all perspectives, including those of the scholar, listener, composer, performer, teacher, and student. The Society is committed to fostering diversity, inclusivity, and gender equity in the field.
